The biggest barrier to learning social skills is the fear of being judged, rejected, and making a mistake in real interaction. It is difficult to practice assertiveness in a conversation with a dominant colleague. It is even more difficult to learn how to resolve conflicts in the middle of an authentic argument. Artificial intelligence in schools offers something priceless: a virtual “sandbox” for emotions. In a dialogue with a chatbot, the student can fearlessly test different communication styles, practice difficult conversations, and observe the potential consequences of their words in a controlled environment. The role of the teacher changes from a participant in the intervention to its director – an architect of empathetic experiences, who designs scenarios and moderates the later, in-depth discussion in the classroom.
How to Teach Empathy with AI: Simulations to Step Into Someone Else’s Shoes
Empathy, i.e. the ability to empathize with another person’s perspective and emotions, is extremely difficult to teach using the lecture method. However, it can be effectively trained through immersive exercises, in which AI for teachers becomes an inexhaustible generator of worlds and characters.
Scenario 1: Interactive interview with a historical or literary figure
This is one of the most powerful exercises for the development of soft skills with AI. Instead of writing a characteristic, the student conducts an interview.
Example from history/Polish lesson: The teacher gives you the task: “Your goal is to understand Antigone’s moral dilemmas. Launch the chatbot and interview her. The AI will take on her character. Ask open-ended questions that will help you understand her motivations, fears, and relationship with her sister.”
Example prompt for AI: “Take on the role of Antigone from Sophocles’ tragedy. Answer my questions according to her character, value system, and knowledge of the world. Be brave, but also show your human dimension and sadness.”
Such a dialogue forces the student to actively think about the perspective of the other person. By asking questions like, “Weren’t you afraid of Creon’s wrath? What did you feel when Ismena refused to help you?”, the student must imagine her emotional state, and not just recite facts from the reading. An analysis of the transcript of such an “interview” is then a fantastic material for a lesson script about emotions and moral dilemmas.
Scenario 2: Conflict Perspective Generator
AI can help students understand that in every conflict, rarely is one side 100% right.
An example from an educational lesson: The topic is conflict resolution in the classroom. The teacher describes a hypothetical dispute: “Ania and Kasia quarreled about the project, Ania claims that she did most of the work.”
Prompt for AI: “Here is a description of a conflict between two students. Acting as a psychologist, write two short internal monologues. The first from Ania’s perspective, focusing on her sense of injustice and overload. The second from Kasia’s perspective, focusing on her fear of the task and the feeling of being dominated by Ania.”
Reading and analyzing both perspectives in the classroom is a powerful lesson in empathy that shows that behind every behavior there are unspoken emotions and needs.
Chatbot Conversation Simulations: A Testing Ground for Difficult Interactions
This is the most direct form of emotional intelligence training with AI. The chatbot becomes a virtual actor with whom the student can practice specific communication skills in a safe environment.
Assertiveness and boundary training
Problem: The student cannot refuse and often succumbs to peer pressure.
Simulation: The student initiates a dialogue with the AI that has been given a specific role.
- Prompt for AI: “Take on the role of a colleague who insists that I let him write homework. Use different persuasion techniques: first ask, then appeal to our friendship, and finally try to make me feel guilty. My job is to practice assertive refusal.”
A student can practice different forms of refusal repeatedly, learning how to be firm but polite. He can reset the conversation and try a different strategy. It is learning by repetition, without the risk of spoiling a real relationship.
Active listening and support training
Problem: Students often lack the skills to support a colleague in a difficult situation, their reactions can be superficial or judgmental.
Simulation: The student trains the role of a good friend.
Prompt for AI: “Play the role of a teenager who is sad because he got a poor grade on an important test, even though he studied a lot. My job is to have a conversation with you where I will support you using active listening techniques such as paraphrasing and asking open-ended questions. Don’t give me simple solutions, focus on your emotions.”
Such a simulation teaches how more important than giving advice is listening to and validating someone’s feelings, which is the foundation of EQ at school.

AI in Recognizing and Naming Emotions: Building the Foundation of Self-Awareness
Before a student can effectively manage their emotions or empathize with others, they must first learn to recognize them and name them precisely within themselves. This fundamental skill, known as “emotional granulation,” is the foundation of high emotional intelligence. Artificial intelligence in education offers unique tools to develop this competence, especially in children who have difficulty doing so. The teacher can use AI image generators to create visual emotion cards with unprecedented subtlety. Instead of the standard “sad” or “happy” pictograms, images can be generated to illustrate much more complex states, such as “nostalgia”, “disappointment”, “relief” or “oneiric reverie”. Prompt for AI: “Create a portrait of a teenager in an impressionist style. His expression should convey a mixture of relief and exhaustion after a difficult exam.” The analysis of such images in an educational lesson becomes the starting point for a rich discussion that expands the emotional vocabulary of students. In addition, in a secure, private conversation with the chatbot, the student can try to describe their feelings, and the AI, acting as a linguistic partner, can help them find more precise words by paraphrasing their statements and suggesting different terms.
The Ethical Dimension of Simulation: The Limitations of AI and the Role of the Teacher
When implementing chatbot conversation simulations to develop EQ at school, we need to be aware of their ethical limitations and communicate them clearly to students. Artificial intelligence is a powerful training tool, but it is not and cannot be a substitute for a human therapist, psychologist or smart adult. The teacher must act as a moral compass that teaches where the usefulness of simulation ends. The key is to explain to students that the chatbot does not “feel” and “understand” their problems in a human sense. His empathetic responses are the result of an advanced language pattern, not authentic insight. Therefore, although teaching empathy with AI is possible at the level of skills training, in the case of real, deep emotional problems, students need to know that they should always turn to a trusted adult – teacher, pedagogue, parent – for help. Lessons that use AI to develop EQ must therefore include an element of meta-education: learning about what technology is and what it is not. This builds healthy criticism in students and protects them from naïve, potentially harmful trust in algorithms in matters as sensitive as mental health.
Long-term development of soft skills with AI:
We achieve the greatest strength in developing soft skills in AI when we go beyond single, 45-minute scenarios and weave these tools into long-term, interdisciplinary projects. Let’s imagine a project lasting an entire semester, in which students are tasked with creating a social campaign on the topic of combating stress. As part of this project:
a) learn about the physiology of stress in biology;
b) in computer science, using AI, design a website and graphics;
c) write articles and scripts for short films in Polish;
d) and during the lesson, using simulations of conversations with a chatbot, they train how to provide support to peers.
In addition, they can use AI to create relaxing music or record short audiobooks with breathing techniques with the help of an AI voiceover. Such an integrated project shows that emotional intelligence is not a detached “subject” from life, but a key set of skills that have practical application in every aspect of creative and teamwork. It is knowing how to design such complex, engaging and multidimensional learning experiences that distinguishes a teacher who “uses” AI from an educator who “orchestrates” the learning process with its help. This kind of holistic approach to integrating technology into the curriculum is one of the pillars of the educational philosophy that I present in my guide, because I believe that only such holistic action brings about real and lasting change.
