AI games for early years: how to creatively introduce young children to the world of tech

For many educators and parents, the combination of the words “artificial intelligence” and “preschooler” sounds like the beginning of an anti-utopian story. In a world where we struggle so hard to develop fine motor skills, build peer relationships and limit passive screen time in children, the idea of introducing advanced algorithms into a room full of blocks and paints may seem like a step in the wrong direction. Isn’t this the final capitulation in the fight for an analogue, stimulating childhood? Do we really need AI for preschoolers?

These fears are not only understandable, but also right – as long as we perceive AI as another passive application for “watching”. But what if we look at it completely differently? What if we treat it not as a screen, but as an inexhaustible source of inspiration? Not as a substitute for the teacher, but as his magical, creative assistant? Before we move on to specific ideas for educational games with AI, we need to establish fundamental, non-negotiable principles of pedagogical safety. The use of AI in schools at the early school and preschool stage must be based on the iron foundation of conscious mediation.

Principle 1: The teacher as a magical filter and translator

The teacher or parent plays the role of an absolutely key intermediary here – a “magic filter”. It is the adult who asks questions, interprets and “translates” the AI’s answers into a language and context that the child understands. The AI tool is on the teacher’s desk, not in the hands of the child. We control the interaction, taking care of its safety and pedagogical purpose.

Principle 2: Process, not product – AI as an inflammatory spark

The purpose of using AI is not to generate a perfect picture or a ready-made fairy tale for a child to admire. The goal is to initiate the creative process. The AI-generated illustration is to become an inspiration to draw your own. A short outline of the characters is supposed to be the beginning of telling the story using puppets. The value is not the digital product, but what the child will do with it in the physical world.

Principle 3: Digital-Analogue Hybrid – Always Connecting Worlds

Every play with technology must have its extension in the analogue world. If the AI generates an idea for a building out of blocks, the children immediately move on to building it on the carpet. If it creates a simple melody, the children try to clap it or play it on the bells. Early childhood education with AI only makes sense if the digital impulse leads to physical action, movement, and interaction with matter.

An Inexhaustible Source of Stories: Developing Imagination and Language Skills

Children love stories. AI can become an inexhaustible source of inspiration for creating unique, personalized stories that engage the whole group.

Game 1: “Magic Character Chest”

Objective: Developing creativity, vocabulary, building narratives.

Course: The teacher says, “Today we are going to create our own fairy tale! What do we need to get started? A hero! What is our hero supposed to be?”. The children give ideas (e.g. “a small, shy dragon who is afraid of fire”). The teacher writes this as a command for the AI image generator.

Prompt for AI (teacher): “Create a cute cartoon illustration of a little blue dragon that looks a little scared and holds a bucket of water in its paws instead of breathing fire. Style: illustration for a children’s book.”

The teacher shows the generated image on the interactive whiteboard. This becomes the starting point. “Here is our dragon Stefan! Where does he live? In what forest?”. The children give more ideas, the teacher generates the background. Then, together, looking at the paintings, they create a story that the teacher writes down. This is an example of how safe AI tools for children can become fuel for collaborative creativity.

Game 2: “What if…?” – Imagination Gymnastics

Objective: Abstract thinking, sense of humour, speech development.

Course: The teacher initiates the game by asking an absurd question, and the AI helps visualize the answer. “Children, what if the chairs in our room had wings?”

Prompt for AI (teacher): “Draw a colorful, joyful kindergarten room where small wooden chairs have colorful bird wings and float in the air. Surprised but smiling children play on the floor.”

Such an image becomes a pretext for conversation, laughter and inventing new, unusual scenarios, which is a fantastic example of stimulating creativity in kindergarten.

Educational Games with AI: Learning through Play in a New Dimension

AI is not only a creative tool, but also a powerful engine for generating personalized educational games and activities that perfectly match the needs and interests of the group.

Game 3: “Rhymes and Strange Words Factory”

Objective: Development of phonological awareness, enrichment of vocabulary, learning to read globally.

Course: The children sit in a circle and give a word, e.g. “cat”. The teacher asks the AI, “Give five funny, simple rhymes to the word ‘cat.'” AI generates: “fence”, “hammer”, “lok”, etc. The teacher writes them down on the board. Then he asks: “Now come up with one ridiculous, non-existent word that also rhymes with the word ‘cat.'” The AI can generate: “dryndolot”. Children burst out laughing, and at the same time they learn the construction of words and practice phonemic hearing.

Game 4: “Master of Animal Riddles”

Objective: Consolidating natural knowledge, practicing logical thinking and reasoning.

Course: The teacher says: “Today our guest is Mr. Computer, who knows all the animals in the world. Think of an animal, and it will try to tell you about it so that we can guess.” Children choose, for example, a giraffe.

Prompt for AI (teacher): “Create a riddle in the form of a rhyme for 5-year-olds about a giraffe. Don’t use the word ‘giraffe’. Focus on her long neck and patches on her skin.”

The teacher reads the rhyme, and the children guess. Thanks to AI, you can generate an infinite number of puzzles on any topic in a matter of seconds.

Individualization of development support: AI in working with children with special educational needs

The use of artificial intelligence in early childhood education is of particular importance in the context of working with children with special educational needs. This is where a personalized approach is not so much a luxury as a necessity. AI is becoming a powerful tool in the hands of supportive teachers, therapists and speech therapists, allowing for the creation of materials perfectly tailored to the individual difficulties and predispositions of the child. Let’s imagine a child on the autism spectrum, for whom creating social stories is a key element of therapy. In a few moments, the teacher can generate a series of simple, cartoon pictures illustrating a specific social situation, e.g. “How to behave on the playground?” or “What to do when I want to join the game?”. Safe AI tools for children allow for instant visualization, which is much more understandable for many of them than the text itself. Similarly, in speech therapy, AI can generate short, funny rhymes and songs that naturally practice articulating problematic sounds, based on vocabulary close to the child’s interests – for example, creating a nursery rhyme about trains for a young railway fan. This is a deep dimension of personalization that would be extremely time-consuming to achieve manually.

Developing Computational Thinking: AI as an Introduction to the World of Algorithms

The introduction of AI for preschoolers is not only about developing creativity, but also an excellent, natural opportunity to shape the foundations of computational and algorithmic thinking, which are key competencies of the future. Although it sounds complicated, in practice it comes down to simple and extremely engaging games. Children learn that in order to get the desired effect from the “magic computer”, they have to give it a very precise command. The teacher, acting as an intermediary, can play “instructions for the robot”. Playing with technology is when children work together to create a recipe for drawing a picture: “Draw a big, yellow circle. Then draw eight thin orange rays on it. And draw a smiling face in the middle.” The teacher writes this as a command for the AI. When the joyful sun appears on the screen, children experience in practice how a precise, sequential algorithm (recipe) leads to a specific result. In this way, they learn cause-and-effect logic, precision in communication and decomposition of the problem into smaller steps, all in the form of joyful, creative fun, which is an ideal introduction to more advanced coding learning in later years.

The teacher as a content curator and a model of digital competence

In the context of educating the youngest, the role of the teacher is evolving towards a conscious curator and a model of digital competences. Our job is not only to deliver content, but above all to model healthy and safe habits of using technology. When we use AI in the classroom, children observe not only what we create, but how we do it. They see that an adult approaches technology in a purposeful and critical way. They hear the teacher say out loud, “Hmm, I don’t like this picture, the dragon looks too threatening. Let’s try again, but ask him to be more smiling.” This is an extremely important lesson. Children learn that technology is a tool under our control, not an almighty force whose effects must be uncritically accepted. They also learn the language of intentions and the precise formulation of their thoughts. This modeling role is the foundation on which digital literacy is built. Mastering this art, the conscious and transparent use of technology in front of children, is a key skill that goes beyond the knowledge of applications.
