One of the most interesting options from the “budget-friendly” segment is Orunia Górna – a district located in the South of Gdańsk.
Living here is a completely different reality than in the northern strips of the city. It is a modern, green bedroom district that offers much newer construction at the price of an old large slab from the Littoral. But won’t the daily commute to universities spoil the student’s everyday life? What are the costs, logistics and safety in Orunia Górna in the academic year 2026/2027? Let’s take a look at the facts.
Orunia Górna and Orunia Dolna: We debunk the Tri-City myth
For people from outside the Tri-City, the name “Orunia” may cause concern due to the historical, not the best fame of this part of the city. The key to understanding this district, however, is a clear separation of it into two completely separate parts: Orunia Górna (along with the new administrative division Orunia Górna – Gdańsk Południe) and Orunia (Dolna).

Orunia Górna: Safe Bedroom Housing Estates
It is a district built mainly at the turn of the century (the 90s and 2000s) and constantly expanded with new developer investments.
- Architecture: Aesthetic blocks of flats made of hollow brick and brick, well-kept yards, modern playgrounds and plenty of space between buildings.
- Safety: It is very quiet here. Young families with children and students looking for cheaper accommodation dominate. There are no dark, pre-war gates that could cause anxiety after dark.
- Location: Streets such as Platynowa, Uranowa, Silicon, Kadmowa or Bishop Albinus Małysiak are classic bedrooms with very good infrastructure.
Logistics and commuting to universities: What does everyday travel look like?
Commuting is a key factor that you need to analyze when considering Upper Orunia. There are no SKM stations here (the closest is Gdańsk Główny or Gdańsk Orunia, but the latter is located at the bottom and requires a longer walk). Transport is based on trams and buses.
The transport heart of this part of the city is the Łostowice-Świętokrzyska Loop (located on the border of Orunia Górna and Ujeścisko).
Trams (lines 2, 6, 7)
Trams depart from the loop every few minutes, which guarantees a stable start to the journey.
- Access to Gdańsk Główny (Śródmieście, ASP, GWSH): approx. 12-15 minutes. It’s a brilliant time. If you study close to the center, Orunia Górna is a great base.
- Getting to Wrzeszcz (Gdańsk University of Technology): Tram line 6 goes from the loop to the PG itself (stop “Politechnika”) in about 25-30 minutes.
- Getting to Oliwa (University of Gdańsk): Lines 2 and 6 go to the UG campus in about 40-45 minutes.
Buses (Key Line 115)
For students of Gdańsk University of Gdańsk Tech and UG, bus line 115 is absolutely sacred.
- It runs from the Łostowice-Świętokrzyska loop through Orunia Górna, Chełm, Siedlce, to Wrzeszcz (near the Gdańsk University of Technology) and further to Oliwa (under the Rector’s Office of the University of Gdańsk).
- Advantage: No need to change.
- Disadvantage: During the morning rush hour (7:15 – 8:15), the bus is stuck in traffic jams on Małomiejskia, Świętokrzyska and Havel streets. The journey may then be longer.

- District heating (CO) is standard. The buildings have good thermal insulation (polystyrene, modern PVC windows).
- Result: Administrative rents are stable, and subsidies for heating in winter are minimal. You will not encounter dramatic gas bills of several hundred zlotys, which are the norm in tenement houses in Wrzeszcz or lower Sopot.

An apartment in Orunia Górna is extremely comfortable in terms of everyday errands. The district has been designed so that everything you need to live is within walking distance.
Shopping and services at your fingertips
- Discounters: On Orunia Górna itself and in its immediate vicinity (at Platynowa, Świętokrzyska, Havel Streets) you will find several Biedronka, two large Lidl, Netto and smaller Żabka stores on almost every corner.
- Green Market (Chełm Passage / pavilions at Platynowa): Great places where you can buy fresh vegetables, fruits, bread from local bakeries and cheap meat directly from Pomeranian suppliers.
- Services: The local housing estates are self-sufficient – you will find numerous pharmacies, clinics, hairdressers, tailors and small repair shops.
Recreation: Oruński Park and Retention Reservoirs
Despite the bedroom character, Orunia Górna offers great places to relax in the open air.
- Emilia Hoene Oruń Park: One of the most beautiful parks in the Tri-City, located in the valley of a stream. Access from Orunia Górna is facilitated by picturesque ravines and stairs leading down the slope. It is an ideal place for running, reading books or a weekend walk.
- “Augustowska” and “Madalińskiego” retention reservoirs: Surrounded by well-kept walking alleys, benches and outdoor gyms. In the evenings, they are popular meeting places for residents and students who want to clear their heads after a whole day of study.
Is it safe here? Night returns from parties
Security in the Gdańsk South is at a very high level. In this respect, Orunia Górna differs from the older, industrial parts of the city.
Personal safety
The streets are wide, well lit by LED lanterns, and most housing estates have CCTV. The quiet, family-friendly character of the district makes the common crime rate (robberies, thefts) very low here. Walking from the tram station at 1:00 or 2:00 at night is not stressful.
How to return at night from Sopot or Gdańsk Główny?
For a student, returning from weekend parties is crucial. From Orunia Górna it is not difficult:
- Night bus N5: This is the most important night line for the Gdańsk South. It runs from the Main Railway Station through Chełm directly to the Łostowice-Świętokrzyska loop. On weekends, buses run every hour, and the route from the center takes about 15 minutes.
- Taxis and apps (Uber, Bolt, Freenow): The cost of returning at night from Gdansk Główny is usually around 15-25 PLN. From Sopot you will pay more (about 45-65 PLN), but when traveling with several people, it is a very cost-effective and fast option.
Pros and cons of student life in Orunia Górna

Frequently asked questions by students about Orunia Górna
I study at the Gdańsk University of Technology. Will commuting from Orunia Górna be burdensome?
Access by tram line 6 from the Łostowice-Świętokrzyska terminus takes about 27 minutes and is direct. If your classes don’t start at 8:00 a.m. every day, your trip will be very comfortable. However, if you have to be at PG every day at 8:00 a.m., take into account the heavier crowd on the trams and plan your departure about 40 minutes in advance.
Are there any problems with parking a car in Orunia Górna?
Compared to Wrzeszcz or Śródmieście, the situation is much better. Most housing estates have publicly available, free above-ground parking lots under the blocks. There is no Paid Parking Zone (SPP) here, so you don’t have to pay for parking your car in front of your house. It can be cramped in the evenings, but you can always find a place within 100-200 meters of the cage.
Where can you learn outside the home in Orunia Górna?
The district does not have a large academic center, so students most often choose to study in their own rooms or commute to the Provincial Library at Targ Rakowy (Śródmieście – about 12 minutes by tram) or to the library in Chełm (Voroniego Street).
Is it easy to get to the Medical University of Gdańsk (MUG) from Orunia Górna?
Yes, access to MUG is quite efficient. Tram lines 2, 6 or 7 will take you to the “Brama Oliwska” or “Uniwersytet Medyczny” stop (at the Baltic Opera) in about 20-22 minutes, from where it takes a few minutes to walk to the main buildings of the university.
Orunia Górna in the academic year 2026/2027 is an excellent choice for students who are hard at stake in their budget and value a high standard of living over a prestigious location. If you study in Śródmieście (Academy of Fine Arts, University of Gdańsk, Faculty of Social Sciences at Toruńska Street) or at MUG, commuting will be quick and trouble-free. For the students of the Gdańsk University of Technology, this is still a very reasonable financial compromise. Only people studying in Oliwa (the main campus of the University of Gdańsk) have to take into account longer journeys by tram, which is worth calculating before signing the lease agreement.
