UrbanCard Wrocław: How to get and use public transport (2026 Student Guide)

UrbanCard Wrocław: How to get and use public transport (2026 Student Guide)

Moving around Wrocław efficiently without access to public transport is a logistical challenge for a student, especially when classes take place on dispersed campuses – from Grunwaldzki Square, through Koszarowa Street, to the base of the University of Economics at Komandorska Street. The key to unlimited and cheap tram and bus rides is the UrbanCard Wrocław, i.e. the Wrocław City Card. It acts as an electronic wallet and carrier of season tickets, which are available to students at a 50% discount. In order to take full advantage of preferential rates and avoid fines, you need to know how to properly integrate the card with student entitlements and which type of semester ticket will pay you back the fastest during the academic year.

What is the UrbanCard and why is it necessary for studies?

UrbanCard is a ticketing system operated by MPK Wrocław, which eliminates the need to buy single tickets. For you, as a student, having a name card is the only way to encode a semester or monthly ticket. The Wrocław system is specific – while you can buy a single ticket contactless in any vehicle, long-term tickets must be assigned to your personal data on a physical medium (plastic card) or in a dedicated mobile application.

The biggest benefit of having an UrbanCard is budget stability. With a semester ticket, you pay a fraction of the amount you would spend on two single rides for one day of moving around the city. What’s more, this card is required to use many city benefits and discount programs, which you will learn about later in the guide.

Types of media: UrbanCard vs. Student Card (ELS)

Before you apply for a new card, check your Electronic Student ID (ELS). Most universities in Wrocław, including the Wrocław University of Technology (WUT), the University of Wrocław (UWr) and the Medical University, issue ID cards that are technically compatible with the UrbanCard system.

EPP as an UrbanCard

This is the most convenient solution. Your student ID card can become a carrier of a MPK ticket. You don’t have to make a separate plastic then. For this to work, your university must have a signed contract with the city (which is standard). You then buy a ticket by providing your ID number, and the system automatically assigns it to a chip in your document. However, please note that the ELS ticket is only valid with a current hologram.

Named Wrocław City Card

If your university does not offer integration or you simply prefer to have a separate document for transport, you should get a standard personal UrbanCard. It is free on the first issue and contains your photo and data. This is a more reliable solution if you happen to forget your ID card for classes and you want to have proof of ticket with you.

How to get an UrbanCard Wrocław step by step?

The application process is simplified so that you can complete the formalities without standing in the long queues that usually form in Wrocław at the turn of September and October.

Track 1: Online Application (Fastest Method)

  1. Go to the official website of urbancard.pl
  2. Select the “Apply for a card” tab.
  3. Fill out the form with your ID card or passport details.
  4. Attach a current photo in digital format (face straight ahead, light background – as for proof).
  5. Select the Customer Service Office (CC) where you will pick up the finished document.
  6. Once you receive an email notification (usually after 2-5 business days), go to collect your card with your ID.

Track 2: Stationary application in CC

If you prefer to handle the matter in person, you can go to one of the service points. In Wrocław, the main locations are:

  • Grabiszyńska 9 (main point),
  • 75-79 Prusa Street,
  • 13 Racławicka Street,
  • Ładna 1c.

On the spot, you fill out a paper application, the clerk takes a photo of you (free of charge) and in most cases the card is issued immediately. However, avoid visiting these points after September 20 – the waiting time in the queue may then exceed 3 hours.

Semester tickets in Wroclaw – prices and profitability

Wrocław offers students two main variants of semester tickets, which are tailored to the cycle of study at universities. These tickets are personal and valid for all tram and bus lines (day and night) within the borders of Wrocław.

4-month semester ticket

It costs PLN 230 (reduced rate). It is ideal for the winter semester (October-January) or summer semester (March-June). When you buy this ticket, you pay about PLN 1.90 per day of unlimited travel.

5-month Semester Ticket

This is the most cost-effective option for people who stay in Wrocław for the duration of sessions and corrections. It costs PLN 285 (reduced rate). It covers a full 150 days. Per day, the cost of mobility drops to a level that no other transport offer can beat.

Ticket for any two lines

If your route is limited only to a ride from a dormitory (e.g. in Wittigów) to a university (e.g. Wyspiański Coast) and you do not plan to change, you can buy a ticket for two specific lines (e.g. tram 1 and 10). It is much cheaper (about PLN 45 per month), but remember: if MPK changes the route of these lines due to renovation (which often happens in Wrocław), your ticket is still valid on the old route and on the new one designated by the carrier.

Activation of discounts: “Our Wrocław” status and UrbanCard

Wrocław promotes people who settle PIT tax in this city. As a student, you can also do this if you indicate Wrocław as your place of residence at the tax office. Thanks to this, you gain status in the Our Wrocław program, which integrates with your UrbanCard.

Benefits of the Our Wrocław program for students:

  • Even lower prices of season tickets (e.g. a reduced monthly ticket for all lines with the status of Our Wrocław costs approx. PLN 40 instead of PLN 55).
  • Free entry to Wrocław’s attractions (Zoo, Aquapark, Hydropolis) once a year.
  • Discounts in cultural and sports institutions.

To activate these discounts on UrbanCard, you need to register in the Our Wrocław system and link your account to your city card. This is an activity that, with a low amount of work, generates the greatest savings on the scale of the entire study.

Where to top up the UrbanCard and how to check the validity of the ticket?

Once you have a physical carrier (UrbanCard or ELS), you need to replenish it with tickets regularly. You have three ways to do this:

  1. Stationary ticket machines: They are located at most stops. You insert the card into the reader, choose a ticket, pay and the system writes the information on the chip.
  2. UrbanCard online portal: You log in to your account, buy a ticket by bank transfer. Important: When purchased online, the ticket does not appear on the card automatically. You need to go to the ticket machine or validator on the bus/tram and select the “Save ticket on card” option.
  3. UrbanCard mobile application: It is a modern alternative. You store the ticket on your phone in the form of a QR code. You don’t need a physical card then, but remember about the charged battery – a discharged phone during the inspection results in a fine.

What should I do if I lose my UrbanCard or ELS with my ticket?

If you lose the card on which you had your semester ticket coded, you don’t lose your money. The UrbanCard Wrocław system is personalized.

  • You need to go to the Customer Service Office (e.g. at 9 Grabiszyńska Street).
  • Report lost card – the old one will be blocked immediately.
  • Submit an application for the issuance of a duplicate (the cost is usually a dozen or so zlotys).
  • The official will transfer the remaining validity of your ticket to a new card.

If the ticket was encoded on ELS and you lost your ID, you must first get a new one at the university and then take it to the CC UrbanCard to assign data from the city system to it.

Practical tips for UrbanCard users

  • Always have a document entitling you to the relief with you: An UrbanCard with a reduced ticket alone is not enough. You must show your student ID during the check. Lack of ID on a valid ticket will end up with a request for payment, which you can cancel at CC after showing the document, but you will have to pay a processing fee (approx. 15-20 PLN).
  • Check the expiration date of the ELS: Student ID cards expire on March 31 and October 31. If your semester ticket ends on November 10 and you have not stamped your card in the Dean’s Office by the end of October, your ticket becomes invalid in the eyes of the controller from November 1.
  • Ticket for two lines and night buses: If you have a ticket for two lines (e.g. 17 and 18), please note that it does not entitle you to travel on night lines, unless the route of the night bus coincides perfectly with the route of the selected lines (which is rare). The ticket for “all lines” includes night transport without restrictions.
  • Shared train ticket: Within the borders of Wrocław, with a season ticket on the UrbanCard (minimum 24-hour), you can travel on Koleje Dolnośląskie and Polregio trains between stations with “Wrocław” in their name (e.g. Wrocław Główny – Wrocław Mikołajów). This is the fastest way to overcome traffic jams.

What exactly to do to travel cheaply in Wrocław?

  • Check your ELS: Find out at the dean’s office if your document has the UrbanCard function (most do).
  • Take a profile picture: You need it for the UrbanCard system (if you don’t want to use ELS).
  • Sign up for urbancard.pl: Create an account to buy tickets online and block your card in case of theft.
  • Choose a 5-month ticket: Do it at the beginning of October so that you have peace of mind until the end of the semester.
  • Download the Nasz Wrocław application: Combine it with UrbanCard to reduce the price of a monthly ticket from PLN 55 to about PLN 40 (if you plan to live here permanently).
  • Set a reminder for ticket expiration: Online systems do not always send notifications, and the penalties for driving without a ticket in Wroclaw are high (over PLN 200).

Electronic Purse on UrbanCard

In addition to season tickets, UrbanCard Wrocław offers the Electronic Purse (EP) function. This is an ideal solution if you live close to the university (e.g. on Grunwaldzki Square) and cover most of the routes on foot, and you use MPK only on weekends or during bad weather.

The EP function allows you to top up your card with any amount of points (where 1 point = 1 PLN). You can use these points to purchase single or time tickets directly at the validating machine in the vehicle.

  • Advantage: You don’t have to take out your payment card on a crowded tram.
  • Cost control: In the passenger portal, you can see the history of all operations, which makes it easier to analyze transport expenses.
  • Ticket for points: In the validating machine, you select the type of ticket, and the system deducts the appropriate amount from the UrbanCard balance. Remember that EP funds do not expire at the end of the semester.

UrbanCard for students from Ukraine – the specifics of formalities

As a student from Ukraine applying for an UrbanCard, you need to keep in mind a few additional aspects that will allow you to use the reliefs without any problems. The Wrocław system is open to foreigners, but requires correct identification.

  1. Identity document: To get a card, you need a foreign passport. If you have a PESEL number, it is worth providing it in the system, which will facilitate possible integration with the “Our Wrocław” program.
  2. Ukrainian vs. Polish ID: If you are studying at a university in Wroclaw, your Polish ELS is enough proof for relief. However, if you are studying in Ukraine and you are staying in Wrocław, for example, for an internship, you must have an ISIC (International Student Identity Card) issued outside Polish for the controller to recognize your right to a reduced ticket for the UrbanCard.
  3. Document translations: In the case of using discounts dedicated to large families (Large Family Card), documents issued in Ukraine must be translated by a sworn translator.

A common train ticket – how does the UrbanCard make life easier for students from agglomerations?

Wrocław is not only about trams. Thanks to the integration of systems, your UrbanCard with a semester ticket (or at least a 24-hour ticket) opens the door to Koleje Dolnośląskie (KD) and Polregio trains within the city limits.

This is crucial for students living in districts such as Leśnica, Psie Pole or Pracze Odrzańskie.

  • Route: You can take the train at the Wrocław Główny station and get to the Wrocław Mikołajów station (close to the non-public universities at Legnicka Street) in 4 minutes, avoiding traffic jams.
  • Requirement: The UrbanCard ticket must be valid at the time of the on-board check. You don’t need to buy a separate train ticket as long as you don’t cross the border stations of Wroclaw.
  • Verification: The conductor on the train has a reader that checks the validity of your ticket stored on the UrbanCard or ELS chip.

UrbanCard vs. iMPK application

Wroclaw offers two main mobile systems that should not be confused. A good organization of work with these applications saves time between lectures.

Mobile UrbanCard

It is used for ticket operations only. You can buy a semester ticket in the form of a QR code.

  • Note: If you buy a ticket in the app, you won’t have it on your physical card. This is a solution for people who do not want to carry a wallet.
  • Risks: If your phone freezes or discharges, and you don’t have a plastic version – you are treated as a passenger without a ticket.

iMPK Wrocław

It’s a real-time vehicle tracking app.

  • Feature: You can see exactly where your tram line 33 or bus 145 is located.
  • Application: It allows you to stay 5 minutes longer in the library because you know the bus is delayed. It is a system independent of UrbanCard, but necessary for efficient travel planning.

Semester ticket return – procedure

A student’s life can be dynamic. If for some reason you have to give up your studies or leave Wroclaw for a longer period of time, you don’t have to lose money for the unused period of your UrbanCard ticket.

  • Where? You can make a return only at one of the Customer Service Offices (preferably at 9 Grabiszyńska Street).
  • Documents: You must have your UrbanCard (or ELS) and proof of identity with you.
  • Settlement: MPK Wrocław refunds the amount proportional to the unused validity of the ticket.
  • Handling Fee: Usually 20% of the value of the remaining part of the ticket is deducted from the refunded amount (in accordance with the transport regulations). However, this is still more cost-effective than leaving an active ticket that you won’t use.

P+R (Park and Ride) system and UrbanCard for motorized students

If you commute to study from outside Wrocław by your own car, UrbanCard allows you to park for free in strategic points of the city. P+R car parks (e.g. at the Świeradowska Loop or at the Main Railway Station) are available free of charge to holders of active season tickets.

  1. Entrance: You drive up to the barrier.
  2. Verification: You tap your UrbanCard against the reader.
  3. Action: If you have a valid semester ticket, the barrier rises automatically.
  4. Advantage: You save on expensive paid parking zones in the center and near universities, and you travel the rest of the way by tram.

Appeal procedure against a fine in possession of an UrbanCard

Even the most organized student can forget to stamp their ID or be unlucky with a dead phone. UrbanCard gives you a safety gate in such situations.

If you have received a request for payment (fine) and you have purchased a valid ticket in the UrbanCard system:

  • You have 7 days to file a complaint.
  • Go to the CC UrbanCard with your identity document and proof of entitlement to the relief.
  • If the ticket was purchased before the control, but you forgot your card, for example, the penalty will be cancelled.
  • You will only have to pay a processing fee (currently 10% of the value of the full penalty), which is a huge saving compared to the standard fine (approx. PLN 240).

Frequently asked questions about UrbanCard in Wroclaw

Can I have a ticket on my physical card and in the app at the same time?

No. The Wrocław system assigns a ticket to one carrier. If you buy a ticket with a physical card, it won’t appear as a QR code in the app. You need to decide which form is more comfortable for you.

Is the semester ticket valid in the agglomeration (e.g. access to Siechnice or Miękinia)?

A standard student ticket for PLN 230/285 is valid only on city lines (numbers from 1 to 151 and night lines). If you are commuting from towns near Wrocław by buses with numbers 9xx, you must buy an agglomeration or zone ticket, which is more expensive.

Is UrbanCard free for every student?

Obtaining the first personal UrbanCard is free of charge. Only duplicates are paid (in case of loss or damage due to your fault).

What if the ticket machine on the tram doesn’t work and I don’t have an UrbanCard?

A failure of the ticket machine in the vehicle does not relieve you of responsibility for the lack of a ticket. In this case, the controller expects you to buy a ticket through the mobile app or get off and buy it from a stationary machine. Having a coded semester ticket on the UrbanCard completely eliminates this stress.

Can I transfer a ticket from my UrbanCard to my student ID?

Yes, it is possible, but it requires a visit to the UrbanCard Customer Service. You can’t do it yourself online.

As a student over 26 years old, can I use UrbanCard discounts?

A 50% discount on MPK Wrocław rides is available to first- and second-cycle students regardless of age (based on the Act), but doctoral students can use it only up to the age of 35. Always have a valid ID with you.

UrbanCard Wrocław is your most important document next to your student ID. It allows you to save hundreds of zlotys a year and gives you full freedom of movement between the library, the university and the city center. Don’t wait for the October queues – apply online today and activate your semester ticket on the ELS or City Card. Also check out the Our Wrocław program to maximize your benefits and enjoy the charms of the capital of Lower Silesia without worrying about transport costs.
