Philosophy and Sociology at the Jagiellonian University: The Most Difficult Subjects?

Philosophy and Sociology at the Jagiellonian University: The Most Difficult Subjects?

In the fields of Philosophy and Sociology carried out at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow (Faculty of Philosophy), the first year of studies ends on average with success only 65-70% of the originally accepted year. Although the point thresholds in the recruitment process may suggest the relative ease of getting on the lists, the knowledge verification mechanism in the USOS system is merciless. The largest reduction in the number of students occurs after the first winter session, specifically after the announcement of the results of Logic I (for philosophers) and Methodology of Social Sciences (for sociologists). Only about 55% of people who started their studies within the walls of the buildings at Grodzka Street receive their bachelor’s diploma within the statutory deadline.

When and why do students drop out of the list?

Sifting at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Jagiellonian University is not a coincidence, but the result of a clash between the specificity of the humanities and formalized rigor.

Administrative deletion usually takes place after the closure of the protocols in the USOS system after the September campaign. The Dean’s Office issues a decision to remove students from the list of students in the event of exceeding the permissible deficit of ECTS credits, which is usually 12 credits in the first year. This means that failing two key subjects (e.g. Logic and History of Philosophy) automatically ends an academic career without the possibility of obtaining conditional entry for the next year.

Silent resignation is a prevalent phenomenon in November and March. Students, confronted with the level of abstraction in theoretical departments and the volume of reading (reaching 300-500 pages of specialist text per week), stop appearing for exercises. The critical moment is the results of the first colloquium in Formal Logic. When less than 30% of writers in the exercise group in the building at 52 Grodzka Street (Institute of Philosophy) receive positive grades, there is a mass exodus of people who treated their studies as a “repository”.

The most difficult classes at Philosophy and Sociology at the Jagiellonian University

1. Logic I (formal)

  • Location: Institute of Philosophy, 52 Grodzka Street, rooms 40, 42 or the Witkowski Auditorium (in the case of mass lectures).
  • Form of selection: This is an unquestionable philosopher. The grading system is zero-one. There are no points for “good intentions” or “reasoning” in the colloquia and exam – an error in the logical matrix or incorrect closure of the proof in the assumption system results in zero points for the task.
  • Failure to pass Logic I blocks the possibility of enrolling in Logic II and Philosophy of Language. Since Logic I is the foundation, its absence in USOS often results in the need to repeat the entire first year.

2. Quantitative Methods in Sociology (Statistics)

  • Location: Campus of the 600th Anniversary of the Renewal of the Jagiellonian University (Ruczaj), 3 Gronostajowa Street (the Institute of Sociology has moved some of the laboratory classes to modern computer labs).
  • Form of selection: Sociology students, often with a humanistic profile, are confronted with mathematical rigor. They “knock down” the passes from the SPSS or R software.
  • Failure to pass statistics makes it impossible to pursue courses related to market research and data analysis in higher years, which de facto sets the student back by two semesters.

3. History of Ancient and Medieval Philosophy

  • Location: 52 Grodzka Street.
  • Form of selection: The oral exam is considered to be one of the most difficult rites of passage. The student must demonstrate knowledge of the source texts (Plato, Aristotle, Plotinus) to a detailed degree. Inquiries often last 40 minutes per person.
  • The subject blocks the History of Modern Philosophy. Without passing antiquity, a student cannot carry out historical seminars in the second year.

4. Contemporary sociological theories

  • Location: 4 Grodzka Street (Institute of Sociology).
  • Form of selection: Huge volume of material. A written descriptive exam, where a synthesis of the thoughts of m.in. Bourdieu, Foucault or Luhmann is required. The evaluation criterion is extremely subjective in terms of the precision of the scientific language.
  • Blocks the undergraduate seminar.

5. Epistemology (theory of cognition)

  • Location: 52 Grodzka Street.
  • Form of selection: Subject-sieve in the second year. The problem is the level of abstraction. Colloquia require the ability to formalize disputes about the limits of cognition. The pass rate in the first term oscillates around 50%.
  • It blocks the Philosophy of Science and Ontology.

6. Methodology of sociological research

  • Location: 4 Grodzka Street / Ruczaj Campus.
  • Form of selection: The need to prepare your own research project. The project is rejected in USOS if it contains errors in the selection of the sample or operationalization of variables. Failure to improve the project by the end of the semester results in the failure to pass the module.
  • A key subject to obtain approval for apprenticeships.

The most difficult semester – Analysis of material accumulation

From the perspective of an academic auditor, Semester 1 in Philosophy and Semester 3 in Sociology are the “bottlenecks” of these majors.

In the first semester of Philosophy, there is an adaptation shock. The student must master logical and historical skills at the same time. Collisions in the timetable are rare, but the accumulation of “passes” (short tests during exercises) means that students do not have time to prepare for lectures properly. Failure to pass the entrance exam in Logic usually closes the way to passing the exercises, which automatically blocks the entrance to the exam in the main session.

In the third semester of Sociology , there is a methodological pile-up. The student must simultaneously implement Quantitative Methods, Qualitative Methods and Contemporary Sociological Theories. Overlapping deadlines for submitting field research reports with theory exams leads to decision-making paralysis. During this period, USOS records the highest number of applications for a dean’s (dean’s leave).

How not to fall off

When the USOS system shows an unsatisfactory grade in a field subject in the second term, the student has three ways:

  1. Conditional Entry (Condition): It is granted to a student whose ECTS credit deficit does not exceed the limit set by the Faculty Council (usually 12 points). Costs: Each ECTS credit of a repeated course is paid. The rate at the Jagiellonian University is indexed by the Rector’s order – at the Faculty of Philosophy it is about PLN 100-120 for 1 ECTS. Repetition of Logic (7 ECTS) therefore costs about 700-840 PLN.
  2. Board exam (Commission): Final procedure. An application for a commission is submitted to the Dean within 7 days of the announcement of the results of the correction, raising substantive allegations as to the impartiality of the examiner or the form of the exam. The exam takes place in front of the Council of the Institute (minimum 3 people). The real chances of passing the commission are about 10-15%. It is an extremely stressful process and rarely ends with a positive grade if the student has evident substantive deficiencies.
  3. September Campaign: This is the time of final verification. At the Jagiellonian University, the retake session in September is intense. Failure to pass the correction in September with a deficit above the limit results in automatic deletion from the list of students. The letter of deletion is sent electronically (USOS) and by registered letter. This decision can be appealed to the Rector, but the chances of success without “hard” random evidence (e.g. a long-term illness confirmed in a hospital) are close to zero.

Student internships

Internships in Sociology (usually 3-4 weeks) are a heavy bureaucratic requirement. The student must complete a minimum of 120-160 hours in research institutions, offices or HR companies.

  • Bureaucracy: The internship diary must be completed in accordance with the competence syllabus. If the description of the activity does not coincide with the “learning outcomes” (e.g. the student brewed coffee instead of coding data), the internship will not be counted in USOS.
  • Impact on the holiday: Most students complete them in August, which interferes with studying for the retake session (September campaign). Failure to settle the internship by the end of September results in the failure to pass the year, despite passing all the exams.

In Philosophy, practices are often editorial or publishing, but their rank in the process of deletion is lower than in sociology. Nevertheless, the lack of the signature of the internship supervisor means an additional 2-4 ECTS points deficit, which may tip the scales in the decision to expel from the university.

Logistics and costs

The logistics of studying at the Jagiellonian University are dispersed, which affects the fatigue of the material.

  • Access: A sociology student often has to move between the center (Grodzka) and Ruczaj (Gronostajowa). A ride on tram line 18 or 52 during rush hour takes about 35-45 minutes. Two such courses a day are 1.5 hours taken out of study.
  • Cost of living: Krakow in 2026/2027 is one of the most expensive rental markets. The lack of space in a dormitory (e.g. in “Żaczek” or on Bydgoska Street) forces you to work for a while. Sociology students working in corporations in Ruczaj often cannot keep up with the pace and “rely” on statistics, because laboratories require physical presence and ongoing reporting.
  • Learning stability: Working more than 20 hours a week under the rigor of reading at the Institute of Philosophy almost always ends with resignation from studies in the second year.

USOS Mechanics

For a student of Philosophy and Sociology at the Jagiellonian University, the USOSweb system is not just a database of grades, but a tool that, in the absence of technical proficiency, may lead to the removal from the list of students for purely administrative reasons. The biggest procedural challenge is the so-called token registration for language courses and university subjects (OGUN).

Token registration: How does the lack of space in the language course block the year?

At the Faculty of Philosophy, it is required to pass a foreign language course at the B2 level (for a bachelor’s degree) or C1 (for a master’s degree). Language courses often take place in buildings at 2 Krupnicza Street (Jagiellonian University Foreign Language Teaching Centre).

  • System error: If a student does not “click” a place in the first round of token registration, they may be forced to choose a language they do not know or an hour that interferes with the History of Philosophy exercises.
  • Chain of Locks: Failure to pass the language course on time (lack of entry in USOS by the end of the retake session) generates a deficit of ECTS credits (usually 5-6 points). If a student already has a deficit from logic, the release of the language course pushes him beyond the acceptable debt limit, which results in the automatic generation of a decision to delete it.

Attaching items: The most common error in USOS

The student is obliged to “connect” each passed subject to a specific program and stage of study. If a student of Philosophy passes the faculty, but does not connect it to the USOS system by the set deadline (usually by the end of the correction period), ECTS credits will not be added to the semester achievements. The system will then show “failure to achieve the required progress in learning”, which triggers an explanatory procedure in the Dean’s Office at 24 Gołębia Street.

Why do 15% of students drop out in their last semester?

The phenomenon of “sifting at the finish” is a specificity of humanities faculties at the Jagiellonian University. Many people pass all the exams but never proceed to defend their bachelor’s or master’s thesis.

JSA (Uniform Plagiarism Prevention System)

In fields such as Sociology, where theses are based on data analysis or interviews, the rigor of the JSA system is extreme.

  • Specifics: If a student cites the classics (e.g. Weber or Durkheim) too densely in a thesis on theoretical sociology without observing the rigorous editorial standards of the Jagiellonian University, the JSA system shows a high similarity coefficient (often above 30%).
  • Result: The supervisor is obliged to block such work. A student who does not correct the text before the end of the diploma session loses ECTS points for the Seminar (often 10-15 points), which makes it impossible to settle the studies.

Undergraduate Seminary as a Blockade

At the Institute of Sociology (4 Grodzka Street) and the Institute of Philosophy (52 Grodzka Street), the selection of the supervisor takes place in a ranking system. If a student with a low average ends up with a supervisor with very high substantive requirements, he may not get credit from the seminar. Failure to pass the seminar in the third year is the most common reason for the need to resume studies after a year of break, which is associated with the rector’s fee for “repeating the diploma seminar”.

Advanced critical path

Logic II (Calculus of Predicates and Metatheory)

  • Location: 52 Grodzka Street.
  • Form of elimination: A continuation of Logic I, but at a higher level of formalization. Here it is no longer just “making tables”, but proving theorems in axiomatic systems.
  • Students who pass Logic I with a “three” usually rely on Logic II on the first term. The pass rate for the retake in September is about 60%. It is a subject that ultimately verifies the predisposition to practice analytic philosophy.

Philosophy of Language

  • Location: rooms of the Institute of Philosophy.
  • Form of elimination: A written exam requiring precise use of Frege, Russell and Wittgenstein terminology.
  • The hosts scold for the lack of precision in distinguishing meaning from meaning. One terminological error in the definition of a definite description results in the nullification of an open question.

Qualitative Data Analysis (Sociology)

  • Location: Ruczaj, 3 Gronostajowa Street.
  • Form of elimination: Work on software (e.g. NVivo or MAXQDA).
  • This is not “talking to people”. It is a rigorous coding of transcriptions according to a categorization key. Students “knock down” this subject due to the lack of regularity – it takes about 100 hours of work to code 20 interviews. People who are paid physically are not able to submit the project on time.

Krakow as a corporate hub

For students of Sociology and Philosophy at the Jagiellonian University, the biggest competitor for science is the Krakow BPO/SSC (Business Process Outsourcing) labor market.

The trap of a paid internship

Many corporations located in Ruczaj, in the immediate vicinity of the Jagiellonian University Campus (companies such as Shell, Motorola, HSBC at Czerwone Maki Street), offer paid internships to second and third year students with earnings of PLN 4000-5000 net.

  • Conflict of interest A student who starts earning real money loses the motivation to forge the “Critical Theory of the Frankfurt School” or “Cultural Anthropology”.
  • Result: Mass resignations in the third year. Students recognize that “experience in a corporation” is more important than a degree in sociology. This is a strategic mistake – without a bachelor’s degree, the path to promotion to managerial positions in the same corporations is blocked after 2-3 years.

BJ vs. Faculty Library

Access to literature at the Jagiellonian University is an element of the credit strategy.

  1. Jagiellonian Library (22 Mickiewicza Street): The main warehouse, but the system of ordering books to the reading room can be slow. Failure to return the book on time results in the blocking of the account, which is a disaster during the session (when you need more reading).
  2. Faculty Library (52 Grodzka Street): It has unique scripts and rare editions of source texts (e.g. the “Library of Classics of Philosophy” series). The number of copies is limited (often 2-3 pieces per 100 students).

The most effective students use the Jagiellonian University’s e-resources through the Proxy system. Access to the JSTOR or Taylor & Francis databases allows you to download literature in PDF without leaving home, which saves 2-3 hours a day on commuting to the center.

Frequently Asked Questions by Philosophy and Sociology Students

What if I don’t pass the entrance exam from Logic I at the cathedral at 52 Grodzka Street?

Failure to pass the entrance exam in Logic I is an alarm signal, but procedurally it does not mean the end of the course. According to most syllabuses at the Institute of Philosophy, the student is entitled to one revision of the partial colloquium or (depending on the teacher) the opportunity to make up for points through activity in class. However, if the sum of the points from the entrance exams at the end of the semester is lower than 50% (the passing threshold), the student receives an unsatisfactory grade from the exercises. In the USOS system, this blocks the possibility of signing up for the exam on the first date. Then there is only a struggle for retaking the exercises (usually in the form of a colloquium from the whole semester), which is technically more difficult than current learning.

How do I bypass the block on Quantitative Methodology if I crash Statistics?

Officially, there is no way to “bypass” the blockade, because Quantitative Methods are a so-called sequential subject. If your USOS shows 2.0 from Statistics, the system will not allow you to register for the third year research modules. The only procedural path is to submit an application to the Vice-Dean for Student Affairs for the so-called “registration with a deficit of points and conditional admission to a higher semester course”. The Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Philosophy rarely issues such approvals, unless the student demonstrates that the failure in statistics was due to random reasons, and his average in other subjects (e.g. theory) is high. In 90% of cases, the release of statistics means a year of interruption in the implementation of the research path.

What to do if USOS blocks token registration for a language course?

The blocking of token registration usually results from the lack of connection of a stage of study or unpaid conditions from previous semesters. If the system displays a message that you are not eligible, you need to check in the “payments” section whether you are in arrears with your ECTS fee. If the finances are clean, the cause may be a technical error when migrating data from the summer to winter semester. In such a case, the only way is to immediately visit the Dean’s Office (section for the course of study) or contact the USOS System Service Office. Don’t wait, because places for attractive language courses (e.g. academic English for humanists) disappear within 15 minutes of the opening of the round.

Can absence from Sociology classes be worked off?

Sociology at the Jagiellonian University puts a lot of emphasis on presence. Usually 2 unexcused absences per semester are allowed. Each subsequent one requires the presentation of a sick leave (L4) delivered to the instructor within 7 days. The possibility of “working off” classes with another group depends solely on the assistant’s goodwill and the limit of places in the room in Ruczaj. If you do not complete these formalities, the instructor will enter a failure to pass in the USOS, which is tantamount to a grade of 2.0 and the inability to take the exam. In the case of research methodologies, absence from key laboratories from survey design usually results in the need to repeat the entire module in the following year.

How to write an appeal against the grade to the Head of the Department?

The appeal (complaint of the assessment) must be substantive, not emotional. You must indicate specific shortcomings: e.g. the questions in the exam went beyond the scope given in the syllabus, or the examiner did not take into account the correct answer in accordance with the literature of the subject. You submit the letter to the secretariat of the Institute of Philosophy or Sociology. Remember that the Chair usually consults with the examiner, so your arguments must be supported by quotes from textbooks. If the appeal is rejected, there is a request for a board exam, but this is a “double-edged sword” – the board can assess your knowledge even more harshly.

Where is the safest place to buy scripts and notes for the History of Sociology?

The safest source is photocopying points in the vicinity of Grodzka Street and Gołębia Street, which have been archiving “inherited” materials for years. However, in the age of digitization, an internal file exchange system for MS Teams or closed student repositories works best. Warning: Departments of theoretical sociology update their reading list with new English-language publications every year. Using scripts from 5 years ago is fraught with risk – on the exam in “Contemporary Sociology” there may be questions about authors who are not in the old notes. Always verify the question exchange with the current item card in the USOS system.
