Student City Card – discounts, concessions, and formalities
Cheap city travel: the student city card
The start of the academic year is the perfect time to sort out the formalities for public transport. A student city card is an absolute essential for your wallet if you want to save money every day on travel to university, the library, or meetings with friends. Thanks to this, you gain access to the cheapest season tickets (monthly and semester), which allow for unlimited travel on trams, buses, and the underground.
What discounts does a student city card guarantee?
- 50% discount on tickets – statutory student concession allows for the purchase of tickets at half the price compared to the standard fare.
- Semester tickets – special tariffs tailored to the duration of the academic semester (e.g., 4 or 5 months of peace of mind without having to buy individual tickets).
- Additional partner discounts – in many cities, a registered city card acts as a loyalty card, offering cheaper entry to cinemas, theatres, museums, swimming pools, or selected cafés.
How to get a student city card? Step by step
The application process is simple, and in most cities, you can complete it entirely online. To activate student discounts on your city card, you will need:
- A current ID-style photo (in digital or paper format).
- A valid student ID card (ELS) confirming your student status.
- A completed application form for the card (via the internet or at a Passenger Service Point).
Important tip: In many cities, your Electronic Student ID (ELS) can be encoded as a city card! Check with your local transport authority (ZTM/MPK) to see if you can load tickets directly onto your student ID, saving space in your wallet.
Don’t forget to validate your student ID!
Remember that the city card or encoded ticket alone will not protect you from a fine during an inspection. You must always carry a valid student ID with an up-to-date holographic sticker for the current semester.
