How can teachers use AI to create exams?
Using artificial intelligence in a teacher’s workflow saves hundreds of hours previously consumed by paperwork and test drafting. Advanced language models (like Gemini) can handle these tasks in a fraction of a second.
1. Automated question generation from lesson materials
All you need to do is paste the content of a textbook chapter, your presentation notes or a scientific article into the AI and provide a suitable instruction (prompt). The AI can create:
- Single- or multiple-choice questions.
- True or false tasks.
- Open-ended questions complete with a ready-made answer key and marking criteria for the teacher.
2. Creating an infinite number of test versions (An end to cheating)
Cheating on tests is an age-old problem in schools. Thanks to AI, you can generate 5, 10, or even 30 unique versions of the same assessment. The algorithm can change numerical data in maths problems, modify the wording of history questions, or swap examples in an English test, all while maintaining the exact same level of difficulty. Copying from a classmate becomes quite simply impossible.

Preparing assessments for students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (such as dyslexia, autism spectrum conditions, or learning difficulties) can be time-consuming. Hyper-personalisation: Adaptive testing driven by AI
The most fascinating direction of AI development in schools is so-called adaptive testing. How does this work in practice?
A student sits in front of a computer or tablet and begins to take a test generated by the AI system. The algorithm does not have a rigid list of questions – it responds in real time to the student’s answers:
- If the student easily answers the first, moderately difficult question, the AI automatically serves up a harder task next to test the full scope of their talent.
- If the student makes a mistake, the algorithm immediately lowers the bar and offers an easier question or one phrased differently, in order to pinpoint exactly where the student stopped understanding the material.
As a result, every student in the class finishes the assessment with a completely different set of questions, and the teacher receives a brilliant, detailed report: “Kamil has mastered 85% of the material; he is doing great with the theory but needs extra practice with word problems.”
Important methodological note: Despite the immense support from technology, the ultimate grading and verification of results must always remain with a human. AI can check grammar or equation results, but it will not replace a teacher in assessing a student’s out-of-the-box, creative thinking or their personal commitment to learning.
