Temporary registration for students – requirements, benefits, and formalities
Does a student have to register their address? Regulations and reality
Moving to another city for your studies brings up the question of mandatory address registration (zameldowanie). Under Polish law, anyone staying at a specific address for longer than three months should complete the formalities at the local office. In practice for students, the solution is temporary registration, which registers your place of residence for the duration of the academic year or your lease agreement.
Although there are currently no fines for Polish citizens for failing to register, completing this obligation provides a number of very practical benefits in everyday life.
Why is it worth having temporary registration as a student?
- Handling administrative matters locally: With a registered address, you can apply for an ID card, a passport, or register a car in the city where you study, without needing to return to your hometown.
- Resident cards and cheaper tickets: Many university cities (e.g., Warsaw, Krakow, Wroclaw) offer special discounts on public transport and cultural events for registered local residents.
- Important for international students: For foreigners (e.g., students from Ukraine), temporary registration is often a necessary document for obtaining a residence card or opening certain bank accounts.
How to arrange temporary registration? Step by step
The procedure is free of charge and can be completed in person at the local municipal/district office or entirely online via a Trusted Profile (ePUAP platform). To register for a temporary stay, you need a few documents:
- Rental agreement for a room or apartment: You must have a valid contract signed with the owner. Important: You do not need the owner’s consent to register if you have a legal lease agreement for the premises!
- Certificate from the dormitory: If you live in a student dormitory, the administration will issue you an appropriate document confirming your accommodation.
- Identity document: ID card, passport, or residence card (karta pobytu).
- Temporary residence registration form: Filled out at the office or via the electronic system.
Legal myth: Many landlords are afraid of registering students, thinking it gives them rights to the property. This is a mistake! Temporary registration is merely confirmation of the fact that you live there, and it expires automatically after the specified period. It in no way restricts the landlord’s property rights.
Where to vote in elections?
Temporary registration also makes it easier to add yourself to the electoral roll in the city where you are studying. Thanks to this, you can take part in parliamentary or presidential elections without having to travel back to your permanent place of residence.
