How to survive your first year at the University of Warsaw 2026/2027
The first year at the University of Warsaw is not a fight for knowledge, but a brutal battle with the USOSweb interface and fractions of seconds during token registrations. If you think that you will start your studies on October 1 during matriculation at Auditorium Maximum, you are wrong. Your studies begin in mid-September, when the servers at 56/66 Dobra Street will start grinding the data of thousands of students fighting for places in language courses and PE. Missing the registration round or incorrectly “plugging in” a course in the system results in the loss of ECTS credits, and in the worst case, a “condition” that in 2026 costs from PLN 800 to PLN 1500 per course in fields such as Law or Management. This guide is your roadmap to UW’s digital and physical infrastructure.
USOS and registrations in the reality of the year 2026/2027
In the academic year 2026/2027, USOS (University Study Service System) is almost entirely integrated with the mObywatel 3.0 application. Forget about paper indexes or running with applications to the dean’s office at Krakowskie Przedmieście 26/28. Everything – from applying for assistance, through choosing a seminar, to checking the grades from the September campaign – happens online.
USOSweb Logistics: Seconds That Decide Your Semester
Registration for general university subjects (the so-called OGUNs), language courses and physical education classes takes place in the token registration system. Each student receives a pool of tokens (e.g. 240 for language courses, 60 for PE).
- Item Exchange: Registrations usually start at 20:00 or 21:00. If you log in at 8:01 p.m., the best English language courses at the Foreign Language Learning Center (7 Pasteura Street) will already be taken. You will be left with classes at 8:00 in the morning at the other end of Warsaw.
- ECTS – Currency of Studies: To pass the year, you must accumulate a minimum of 60 ECTS credits (usually 30 per semester). If you do not reach this number by not registering for OGUN, the system will automatically direct you to the path of repeating the stage.

UW campuses and the communication trap
Warsaw in 2026 is being dug up by the construction of the M3 metro line, which means that it takes longer to move between the Main Campus (Śródmieście) and the Ochota Campus (Banacha/Pasteura Street) than Google Maps shows. When planning a schedule of classes at USOS, always leave yourself a minimum of 45 minutes of “window” for ZTM access.
Guide: How to get to grips with UW step by step?
Activation of ELS and mLegitymacja
Without an Electronic Student ID (ELS), you do not exist. It serves as a library card for the University of Warsaw, a ticket to the sports zone and a carrier for the city card.
- What to do: After matriculation, upload the photo to USOS. Once the status changes to “for collection,” head to the student section of your faculty.
- If you do not extend the validity of your card until 31 March/31 October, your reduced ticket at ZTM becomes invalid. The fine in 2026 is nearly PLN 300.
Token Registration: “F5” Strategy
Before each round of registration:
- Clear your browser’s cache.
- Check the item code (e.g., 0000-OG-….).
- Add items to the “cart” in advance if the system allows it.
- Click “send” exactly in a second zero server time.
“Hook-ups” – the biggest nightmare of a first-grader
At USOS, you have to “connect” each subject to a specific study program and stage (year/semester). If you don’t, the course will not be counted towards the average, and you will not receive a semester settlement.
- Procedure: “For students” tab – > “Connections”. Do this before the end of the exam session.
Table: Factsheet and costs
| Element | Cost/Limit | Where to get it? | Remarks |
| ELS Edition | 22 PLN | USOS (bank transfer) | Pick-up at the Dean’s Office |
| Duplicate ID | 33 PLN | USOS | In case of loss |
| 90-day ticket (student) | 140 PLN | City Card (ZTM) | Valid ELS required |
| Photocopy at BUW | 0.60 PLN / p. | BUW (56/66 Dobra Street) | Only with a library card |
| — | — | — | — |
| Condition (1 Item) | 800 – 1500 PLN | Application at USOS | The price depends on the faculty |
| ECTS limit (year) | 60 points | Study plan | You have to keep an eye on the sum |
Why do most students rely on Year 1?
- Ignoring health and safety and library training: These are two mandatory online courses on the Kampus platform. They are not scored, but without passing them, USOS will not allow you to close the year. Students are reminded of this in June, when the system blocks registration for the next semester.
- No verification of the “decision on the settlement of the stage”: At the University of Warsaw, there is a principle of presumed guilt of the student. If you do not see the “Passed” status in the “Decisions” tab in USOS, and the session is over – you have a problem. Probably some kind of rating or connection is missing.
- Being late for the “Language Exchange”: Language courses at the University of Warsaw are at a high level (especially at SJO at 69 Nowy Świat Street), but those at convenient hours disappear in 15 seconds. First-graders often think that “it will be somehow” and finish with Latin at 8:00 p.m. on Friday.
Moving psychology: How not to crack in the “Warsaw mill”
Moving to Warsaw for the first year of university is the biggest cognitive shock in life for most 19-year-olds. It’s not just a change of address, it’s a leap from the safe microclimate of a hometown to an aggressive, metropolitan jungle that in 2026 is rushing faster than ever. Fear of a new place, loneliness in a dormitory on Radomska Street or the feeling of being a “jar” in a wealthy faculty are real problems that affect the results at USOS.
Metropolitan shock and fear of anonymity
Warsaw 2026 is a city of noise, constant renovations (construction of the M3 line) and crowds at the Świętokrzyska Metro station. If you come from a smaller town, the first collision with the Warsaw pace can cause the so-called overstimulation.
- Fact: Statistically, every third first-year student of the University of Warsaw considers returning home within the first three months.
- Advice: Don’t fight this city. Accept the fact that you will feel alien here at first. Your “safe harbor” must be a department or a specific WhatsApp/Discord group of your year.
A sense of inferiority and “Warsaw prestige”
The University of Warsaw is a melting pot. In one language course, you will meet a person from a small village near Suwałki and someone who graduated from a private high school in Mokotów and drives up to the Main Campus in a new car.
- Psychology: The feeling of inferiority (“I don’t fit in here”, “they are better than me”) is a projection of your fear. At the University of Warsaw, what matters is your ECTS credits and how you handle projects, not whether you eat lunch in Hala Koszyki or reheat a jar from your mother in the kitchen of DS 5.
How to find people in 2026?
Loneliness is the shortest way to becoming a dean. In the era of full digitization, paradoxically, it is more difficult to get in real contact. If you lock yourself in the four walls of a rented room in Białołęka, the first year will grind you down.
- Faculty integrations: Don’t ignore zero trips and “bean”. This is where cliques form, which then save your ass by sending notes the night before the exam.
- Scientific Clubs: Even if it sounds boring, science clubs (e.g. in the Auditorium Building) are the best way to meet enthusiasts, not people by chance.
- Cooking together in the dormitory: If you live in a DS (e.g. “Toadstool”), the kitchen is your center of operations. There, you will meet people from different directions, which gives you a broader perspective than just your bubble.
Psychological help at the University of Warsaw
In 2026, the University of Warsaw has one of the most extensive psychological support systems in Poland. If you feel that the fear of moving, a photo shoot or a new city is paralyzing you, don’t wait for a breakdown.
- CPP UW (Centre for Psychological Assistance): It is located at 7 Pasteura Street (Ochota Campus). They offer free consultations for students, including short-term therapy. You can sign up online – the system is discreet and separate from USOS.
- Student Ombudsman: If your fear stems from mobbing from a lecturer or problems in the dean’s office, this is your first contact. The office is located at Krakowskie Przedmieście 24.
- Social Scholarships and Allowances: Fear is often financially based. If you have suddenly lost your source of income (e.g. family situation), apply for assistance through USOS. In 2026, the one-off allowance at the University of Warsaw may amount to as much as PLN 2000-3000.
How to survive in the most expensive city in Poland?
Fear of Warsaw is often a fear of your wallet. The academic year 2026/2027 is a time of high rental prices and services.
| Category | Student “Life-hack” | Savings (month) |
| Food | Lunches in canteens of the University of Warsaw (e.g. Faculty of Biology) | approx. 400 PLN |
| Integration | Student Pubs in Ochota vs Trendy Clubs in the Center | approx. 300 PLN |
| Books | Use only of BUW resources and PDF versions | approx. 200 PLN |
| Culture | Free museums on selected days (Castle, National Museum) | approx. 100 PLN |
| Transport | Veturilo city bikes (free 20 min) | approx. 60 PLN |
| TOTAL | Managing your student budget wisely | approx. 1060 PLN |
What do students in Warsaw really ask about?
What are tokens in USOS and why do I have too few of them?
Tokens are the virtual currency of the University of Warsaw. Each first-year student receives a package: 240 tokens for language courses (enough for 4 semesters of 60 hours each), 60 tokens for PE (2 semesters) and a specific pool for OGUNs. If you see “no chips” in the system, and you should have them, report to the student affairs office. Remember: no one refunds money for unused tokens, but for buying additional ones (e.g. when you want to do the third semester of PE or another language) you will pay about PLN 10 per token.
How to sign up for BUW and is it paid?
Registration at the University Library in Warsaw (BUW) at 56/66 Dobra Street is free for UW students. However, you need to “activate” your library account. You do it online through the library catalogue (NUKAT/BUW) or in person at the registration point (ground floor of BUW). Your library card is an ELS card. Note: In 2026, entry to the free access zone is done through biometric gateways or a scan of mLegitymacija. BUW is not only about books – it is the best place to study in a session, but during the “peak” (January/June) the queue in front of the entrance is already at 7:30 in the morning.
What if I don’t have 30 ECTS at the end of the semester?
If your credit loss does not exceed the allowable limit at your faculty (usually 10-12 ECTS credits), you can apply for the so-called conditional entry. You submit an application via USOSweb to the Head of the Teaching Unit (KJD). However, you have to pay for the unachieved learning outcomes. If the loss is greater, you risk being removed from the list of students or having to repeat the entire semester. Always check the “Regulations of Studies at the University of Warsaw” – this is your constitution.
How does mLegitymacja work at the University of Warsaw in the academic year 2026/2027?
In 2026, mLegitymacja is a full-fledged document. You activate it via a QR code generated in your USOSweb profile, which you then scan in the mObywatel application. It allows you to use student discounts (51% on PKP, 50% on ZTM) without having physical plastic. However, beware: controllers on Koleje Mazowieckie or SKM trains can be annoying – always have your phone charged. mLegitymacja at the University of Warsaw is synchronized with the system in real time; if the dean’s office crosses you out, the ID card on your phone will disappear immediately.
Token registration for language courses – how not to get there at 8:00 in the morning?
The key is the “Token Exchange”. If you didn’t get to the hour of your dreams in the first turn, you can try to swap or “hunt” for free seats in the second turn. Students often drop out of classes during the first two weeks of the semester. It is also worth checking language courses at other faculties – as a student of the University of Warsaw, you have the right to learn a language, e.g. at the Institute of English Studies (Hoża 80 Street), if there are vacancies.
How to understand “connections” in USOS and why is it important?
Attachment is the assignment of a subject to your course of study. You can do this in the “For students” tab -> “My studies” -> “Connections”. You must declare whether the item is part of your main program. If you don’t, the system doesn’t “see” your progress. At the end of the year, you must submit an “application for stage settlement” (also in USOS). No connections = no settlement = no scholarship.
How to get a city card with a student discount in Warsaw?
Your ELS card becomes a ticket carrier when activated in the dean’s office. Go to any ZTM Passenger Service Point (e.g. at the Świętokrzyska Metro station), insert your ID card into the machine and buy a student ticket (30 or 90-day). If you are registered in Warsaw or pay taxes here, upload the “Varsovian Card” to ELS – the ticket will be even cheaper.
Where is the cheapest place to print materials at the University of Warsaw?
Forget about photocopying points at Krakowskie Przedmieście itself – prices there are “touristy”. The cheapest way to print materials is at local government photocopying points at faculties (e.g. at the Faculty of Psychology at Stawki Street or at the Faculty of Political Science) and at small points at Oboźna Street. At BUW, printing is convenient (self-service system), but more expensive. It is worth investing in a tablet with a stylus – most of the materials at the University of Warsaw in 2026 are PDFs in the Moodle system.
How to deal with homesickness?
This is a natural state. The first two weeks of October are the worst. Set fixed times for conversations with your loved ones, but don’t spend whole evenings on them. Concentrate on small rituals in Warsaw: find your favourite café on Oboźna Street, a running route on the Vistula River or your favourite coffee stand at BUW. Taming space is the best medicine for longing.
Do students from Warsaw really look down on “jars”?
It’s a myth from the 90s. Currently, most of the UW students are visitors. In fields such as Law, Psychology or Management, you will find people from all over Polish and the world. Warsaw residents are usually too busy with their own affairs to judge your accent or where you come from. What matters is whether you are well-informed and helpful in group projects.
I’m afraid of registering with USOS – what if I fail everything?
Take it easy. Token registrations have several turns. If you don’t get to your dream PE (e.g. climbing) in the first round, there are always less crowded disciplines (e.g. gym or team games in the halls on Banacha Street). You can also always write an application to the Head of the Teaching Unit (KJD) to join the group – if you have a strong argument, they often go handy.
Where to seek help if I feel that I am not coping mentally?
Head straight to the Psychological Assistance Center of the University of Warsaw. You don’t need a referral from a doctor. You can also use the night support line for students (often organized by the Student Government of the University of Warsaw). If your low mood is due to fear of the session, talk to older generations – they have already been through it and know that “not such a terrible devil”.
