Warsaw University of Technology main campus: A step-by-step guide

The Mokotów part of the University of Technology has a completely different, more industrial and intimate character. It is located in the square of Narbutta, St. Andrew Bobola, Rakowiecka and Wołoska Streets.

Logistics and movement – how to efficiently circulate between campuses?

It happens that the schedule includes a lecture in the Main Building (Śródmieście), and two hours later laboratories in the Mechatronics Building (Mokotów). How to cover this route the fastest?

• Walk through Pole Mokotowskie (The most pleasant option): The distance between the Buildings on Nowowiejska Street and the complex on Narbutta is about 1.5 km. A walk through the wide avenues of Pole Mokotowskie takes about 15-20 minutes. In spring and early autumn, it is definitely the best choice.
• Tram (Fastest option in bad weather): From the Politechnika stop (at Nowowiejska Street) you take tram lines 10, 14, 15 or 17 and go to the GUS or Metro Pole Mokotowskie stop. Alternatively, from the Plac Politechniki stop, take lines 17 or 33 directly in the direction of Wołoska/Rakowiecka.
• Veturilo (City bike): Veturilo stations are located under the Main Building, at the exit of the Politechnika Metro and at the intersection of Narbutta and St. Andrew Bobola. The bike ride between campuses takes less than 7 minutes and is completely free with a time of less than 20 minutes.

Where to eat, print a project and learn in silence?

Life at WUT is not only about learning, but also about everyday functioning in the urban space of the City Centre.

Where to eat cheaply and well?

• Milk Bar “Politechnika” (4 Lwowska Street): An absolute classic. Cheap, home-made dinners (lazy, pancakes, pork chop) with the traditional atmosphere of old Warsaw. At lunchtime, the queue often goes out into the street, but it moves very quickly.
• Buffet in the Main Building: Located in the basement of the GG (entrance by stairs down in the left wing). It offers dishes by weight at affordable prices.
• Noakowskiego and Koszykowa Streets: Gastronomic area. Here you will find numerous bakeries (e.g. Putka, Lubaszka), pizzerias, kebab bars and vegan pubs (especially popular among Architecture students).

Where to print and photocopy designs?

Engineering requires printing technical drawings in large format formats (A3, A2, A1, A0).

• The best and cheapest photocopying points are located along Noakowskiego Street (opposite the Chemistry Building) and in the basement of the Electronics Building.
• Most faculty student councils (WRS) also have their own student offices, where you can print small documents or reports for laboratories free of charge or for a symbolic fee.

Where to study in silence between classes?

• Main Library (BG) in the Main Building: It offers Free Access to the Shelves on the third floor. There you will find individual cabins for quiet operation and large tables with access to electrical outlets. It’s the perfect air-conditioned place to study during a winter session.
• Student Zones at the Faculties: Many buildings have separate relaxation/learning zones (e.g. a modern lobby in the MiNI Building or a zone on the ground floor of the Electronics Building).

USOS and Dean’s Offices – how to deal with formalities without stress?

You can handle most administrative matters at WUT through the USOSweb UL system. This is where you register for subjects, check your grades, and apply for scholarships. However, a visit to the physical dean’s office is sometimes unavoidable (e.g. to collect a sticker for an ELS card).

• Check admission times: No dean’s office operates from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for students. Typically, service hours are 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and selected days of the week (often Wednesdays) are completely closed to applicants.
• Prepare documents in advance: When going to the dean’s office, have all the necessary applications prepared and signed. Female officials at WUT appreciate specificity and substantive preparation.
• Faculty groups on FB/Discord: Before you go to the dean’s office with a problem, describe it on the yearbook group of your faculty. Older generations usually know perfectly well how to solve a given regulation problem and which window is best to go to.

Underground and above-ground connectors – how to pass between buildings without going out into the cold?

Warsaw winter can take its toll, and the need to quickly move between lectures in different buildings during a snowstorm is a dubious pleasure. However, experienced WUT students rarely use the sidewalks along Nowowiejska Street or the University of Technology Square. The Main Campus hides a network of internal passages and connectors, about which official maps are silent.

Connector Main Building (GG) – Physics Building (GF)

The most useful shortcut on campus. It allows you to go from the heart of the university directly to the laboratories and physics halls.

• How to find it? Head to the Main Building on the first floor (level 200). Head to the south-west corner of the building (towards the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography). There you will find an inconspicuous, glazed door with an information board. The passage leads over the inner courtyard directly to the corridors of the Physics Building.

Labyrinths of the Chemistry and Technology Building

The passage between the old Chemistry Building (3 Noakowskiego Street) and the Chemical Technology Building (75 Koszykowa Street) is possible without leaving the buildings.

• How to find it? The key is the basement corridors and connectors at the height of the first floor. This takes practice, as the levels in both buildings are not at the same height (you often have to climb 2-3 steps down or up inside the connector itself), but it allows you to cut the route in half and avoid squeezing through the entrance gates in the cold.

Where to charge a laptop?

The old buildings of the Warsaw University of Technology were created at a time when the only tools a student had was a logarithmic slider, a pencil and a notebook. As a result, in monumental lecture halls (such as the Physics Hall, the Maximum Auditorium at Chemistry or the rooms in the Main Building), access to electricity from the level of the student bench is zero.

• “Pillar” strategy: In the historic halls, electrical sockets were mounted on the supporting pillars and along the side walls (right next to the windows). If you want to have access to electricity, you need to take seats at the edges of the rows, right next to the wall.
• Floorboxes in new construction: In the Electronics, MiNI and Mechatronics Building, sockets are hidden in the floor. Look for round or rectangular metal flaps (so-called floorboxes) under the benches. Simply pry them open with your shoe or hand to access the 230V network.
• Essentials in your backpack: Carry a small, flat splitter (called a thief) or a short extension cord. If the only outlet in sight is already occupied by another student, plugging in a splitter will allow you to use the electricity together. This is the fastest way to establish a good relationship for a year.

The most important sports locations of the Warsaw University of Technology:

• WUT Academic Sports Centre (50 Polna Street): Located right next to the Politechnika Metro station. It is a modern complex with a swimming pool, a climbing wall and fitness rooms. The most desirable location, places for a swimming pool are distributed in USOS in a few seconds.
• Sports Hall (5 Akademicka Street – Ochota): It is located next to the “Riviera” and “Mikrus” dormitories. Basketball, volleyball, table tennis and martial arts classes are held here. It takes about 10 minutes to get there from the Main Campus by tram ( Plac Narutowicza stop).
• Mermaid Stadium (Batorego Street): The complex is open near Pole Mokotowskie. This is where you’ll run if you sign up for athletics or soccer.

Free engineering software – how not to overpay a penny?

Engineering studies require work on specialized CAD/CAM/CAE software. Commercial licenses for these programs cost thousands of euros per year. As a WUT student, you have free access to the most modern engineering tools in the world.

• Microsoft 365 (Office): Each student gets full access to Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams on their private computer (up to 5 devices). Activation is done through the student mail portal.
• AutoDesk (AutoCAD, Inventor, Revit): WUT participates in the Autodesk educational program. By signing up for an Autodesk account using your email address ‘@pw.edu.pl’, you receive free, one-year (renewable) student licenses for your entire software portfolio.
• MATLAB and Simulink: An indispensable tool in electrical, electronic and mechatronic faculties. PW has a Campus-Wide license, which allows you to legally install the full version of MATLAB along with all specialized toolboxes on a private computer.
• Where to look for links? Log in to the Integrated Information Environment portal of WUT or go to the website of the UTP Informatization Center (CI WUT). There you will find the “Software for Students” tab with all the license keys and installation instructions.

USOS and seconds that determine your schedule (Enrollment Strategy)

Registration for electives, laboratories and PE at WUT is carried out using the “first come, first served” method (the so-called token or direct registration). The USOS server is then subjected to a gigantic load and can freeze for several minutes.

• Sync Device Time: USOS opens the registration at the exact appointed time based on the server time. Use a ‘time.is’ web page to see time with millisecond accuracy.
• Prepare the “basket” ahead of time: If the system allows it, add the selected groups to the cart a few hours before the start of registration. When you open your registration, you will only need to click on one button: “Redeem Cart” instead of searching for individual items in the list.
• One-click rule (Never press F5): When zero hour strikes and you click “Register”, the page can take a very long time to load. Do not refresh the page (F5) under any circumstances. Each refresh sends a new query to the database, puts you at the end of the server queue, and drastically increases the risk of a “Gateway Timeout” error. Wait patiently – your request is already being processed.

Scientific clubs and cult projects (WUT Racing, PW-Sat)

Warsaw University of Technology is not only lectures and laboratories, but above all a powerful project base created by Student Scientific Clubs (SKN). Participation in them is the best way to gain commercial experience while still studying. Projects such as the Formula Student car created by WUT Racing, PW-Sat satellites (MEiL Department) or autonomous submarines and drones win awards all over the world.

How to join science clubs as a first-year student?

Recruitment to scientific clubs usually starts twice a year: at the turn of October and November and February and March.

• You don’t have to be an expert: Scientific clubs are looking not only for programmers or constructors, but also for students for marketing, public relations, project management or finance sections.
• Where to look for information? The best opportunity for direct contact is the KONIK Fair of Scientific Clubs and Student Organizations, which takes place cyclically in the Large Hall of the Main Building at the beginning of the winter semester.

WUT Student Clubs – Barn and Renovation as Centres of Academic Life

Student culture at WUT has its physical, cult bases. Two places on the map of Warsaw are inextricably linked to the University of Technology and are centers of entertainment and integration.

Stodola Club (10 Batorego Street)

Located on the outskirts of Pole Mokotowskie, right next to the Pole Mokotowskie metro station. It is one of the most important concert clubs in Poland. Historically founded by WUT students, today it is a place where the largest faculty events, shake-ups and concerts as part of the WUT Juwenalia (including the legendary Great WUT Barbecue in the adjacent green area) take place.

Riviera Remont Club (12a Waryńskiego Street)

Located in the basement of the “Riviera” student dormitory, right next to the Politechnika Metro station. It is here that the everyday, evening student life takes place. The renovation is famous for Thursday and Friday academic events, karaoke, board game tournaments and stand-ups. For a WUT student, it is the default place of integration after a difficult week of colloquia.

Support for students with disabilities and health difficulties (BON WUT)

The aspect of accessibility and health support is often omitted from general guides, and it is a key element of the functioning of universities. If you are facing a long-term illness, adaptation difficulties, mental health problems or have a disability certificate, the Warsaw University of Technology offers systemic assistance through the Office for Persons with Disabilities (BON PW).

• Location: The PW voucher is located in the Main Building, room 150 (ground floor, right wing).

“Hologram” paralysis – two days a year you need to watch out for

Student discounts on public transport (ZTM) and trains (PKP) are only available to holders of a valid ELS card. The expiry date of the card is encoded on the chip and physically glued in the form of a small hologram on the back of the card.

What is the trap?

Many students postpone a visit to the dean’s office in order to extend their ID until the last minute. As a result, on 29, 30 and 31 October, gigantic, several dozen people queues form in front of the dean’s offices, in which people stand for several hours.

• Consequences of being late: If you board the tram on November 1 or April 1 without a new hologram, and your semester ticket on the card is valid, you will receive a call for payment (fine) during the inspection for the lack of a document entitling you to the relief. Even though you are formally a student, without a physical seal/hologram, the ID is invalid in the light of the shipping regulations.
• Solution: Dean’s offices usually accept ID cards for extension from mid-September (for the winter semester) and from the beginning of March (for the summer semester). Do this a month before the deadline – it will take you 30 seconds instead of 3 hours in the queue.

Room 108 at GE is located in the central wing on the first floor (level 100). The easiest way to reach it is to enter through the main entrance from Nowowiejska Street, follow the stairs on the right to the first floor and go through the corridor into the building.

Is there free Wi-Fi for students at the Warsaw University of Technology?

Yes. The international eduroam network operates in all WUT buildings. The login is your data from the USOS system (usually in the ‘[email protected]’ format). The network works stably and allows you to quickly use the Internet on laptops and smartphones.
