Step-by-step: The process of creating teaching materials with AI

The process is simple and is based on providing AI with the right “batch” (source material) and a precise command.

Step 1: Prepare the source material (“batch”)

AI does not create knowledge out of nothing. He needs a base on which to work. Your source material can be:

  • Fragment of text: from a textbook, scientific article, website (e.g. Wikipedia). Just copy and paste.
  • YouTube Video Transcription: Many tools allow you to download a transcript of an educational video. It is a mine of knowledge.
  • Your own notes: Write down the key points you want to include in the material in a few points.
  • Vocabulary list: e.g. for learning a foreign language.
  • Description of the problem: e.g. “Newton’s laws of motion”.

Step 2: Define the Purpose and Format

Before you write a prompt, decide:
  1. What do you create? (worksheet, test, quiz, exit task)
  2. For whom? (age, class, any special needs)
  3. What should be the format of the tasks? (open-ended questions, closed-ended questions, multiple-choice test, supplementary question, crossword, etc.)

Step 3: Create a Master Prompt

This is the heart of the whole process. The more precise the command, the better the result. Use the template below.

Step 4: Iterate and improve

The first version is usually a great base, but it’s rarely perfect. “Discuss” with AI to refine it:

  • “It’s too difficult. Simplify question 5.”
  • “In task 3, add more reliable incorrect answers (distractors).”
  • “Reformat task 4 as a table.”
  • “Generate a crossword puzzle with 5 passwords.”

Step 5: Formatting and finalizing

ChatGPT generates clear text. Copy and paste it into a word processor (Word, Google Docs) or – what I recommend – into a graphic tool like Canva. There, you can add a heading, a space for your name, divide the text into columns and insert illustrations in a few moments.

Practice Secret #1: Creating Distractors.

The hardest part of creating multiple-choice questions is coming up with plausible but incorrect answers (called distractors). AI does it brilliantly! You can even give him specific instructions, e.g. When asking about the date of the Battle of Grunwald, give other important dates from the history of Polish from the same period as distractors. This saves a lot of time and increases the quality of the test.

Examples and Case Study from School Life

Case Study 1: Biology in Primary School – A Varied Worksheet on the Cell

Problem: The teacher needs a worksheet on the structure of a plant cell for grade 5. There are two students in the class with a PPP (learning disability) opinion and one student who is exceptionally talented.

Process:

  • The teacher pastes a short description of a plant cell from a textbook into the AI.
  • It uses a template, asking for 3 versions of a worksheet based on this text:

    – Version 1 (Simplified): “Task: Link the names of the organelles to their location in the drawing. Use only 4 key organelles.”

  • Step 5: Formatting: I copied the content into Canva or a text editor to give it the final look.

Bring Your Materials to Life: How AI Can Draw, Map, and Diagram

A worksheet without visual elements is like a dish without spices – bland and unappetizing. What if you don’t have artistic talent or time to look for free graphics? Artificial intelligence that generates images (e.g. DALL-E 3, integrated for free with Microsoft Copilot) can become your personal illustrator on demand.

How does it work?

You describe in words what you want to see, and the AI turns that description into an image. The key is, as with text, a precise prompt.

Example educational prompts for generating images:
  • Biology: A simple diagram of a plant cell in the style of an educational children’s cartoon, with clearly marked organelles: cell nucleus, chloroplast, cell wall. White background.
  • History: Historical scene: Two Roman legionaries build a road in ancient Rome. Style: Realistic but simple, like from a school textbook. A sunny day.
  • Geography: A geological cross-section of the volcano showing the magma chamber, chimney, and volcanic cone. Simple, easy-to-read diagram with labels. Infographic style.
  • Polish: Symbolic, minimalist graphic illustrating the vanitas motif: a skull lying next to an hourglass and a dying candle. Black and white ink drawing.
Where to do it?
  • Microsoft Copilot (copilot.microsoft.com): Uses the latest version of DALL-E 3 for free. Just type the prompt in the chat window. This is the simplest and fastest option.
  • Canva (Magic Media): You can type the graphics you want to create directly into your worksheet design. It’s incredibly convenient, because the image lands in your document right away.

Case Study: “Illustrated Glossary” for Chemistry

The chemistry teacher prepared materials about laboratory equipment. Instead of looking for photos (which are often copyrighted), he used Copilot. He typed a series of prompts: Test tube with blue liquid, icon style, isolated on white background., Laboratory beaker, drawing style, isolated on white background., Bunsen burner, simple diagram style, isolated on white background. In 10 minutes, he had a set of visually consistent, unique graphics ready for his worksheet. In this way, he increased the understanding and memorization of the material by students, especially visual learners.

No more “feeling” grading: Creating rubrics and grading criteria in 90 seconds

  • Target group and rating scale: [np. Klasa maturalna, skala punktowa 0-25 pkt].

Key criteria to consider (divide into categories):

  1. Thesis (0-5 points): Clarity, consistency with the theme, originality.
  2. Argumentation (0-10 points): Accuracy of arguments, logical coherence, use of examples from reading.
  3. Language and style (0-5 points): Linguistic correctness, richness of vocabulary, stylistics.
  4. Composition (0-5 points): Tripartite structure, consistency of paragraphs.

Format: Create a table with four columns: “Criterion”, “Maximum Points”, “Description for Maximum Points”, “Description for Minimum Points (but above 0)”

Result: The AI will generate a clear table that you can immediately attach to the referral for students. The difference in the quality and precision of their work will be huge, because they will finally know “what they are playing”.

Students have to practice on tasks that resemble those from official worksheets in their structure and “spirit”. AI can learn this format.

Key technique: “Few-Shot Prompting”

It is not enough to write “create a matura assignment”. You need to show the AI what you mean.

  1. Find a pattern: Go to the CKE website and copy one or two assignments from previous years (e.g., a biology assignment with the source text and questions for it).
  2. Provide an AI pattern: Paste these tasks into the chatbot.
  3. Give a command: Write a prompt that refers to the examples given.

Go Outside the Box: Creative Tasks That Ignite Minds

Worksheets and tests are important, but education is more than that. AI can be your partner in creating tasks that develop critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills (PBL – Problem-Based Learning).

Ask the AI to create:
  • Crime Mystery: Create a short crime mystery set in the realities of the French Revolution. The victim is an aristocrat. Introduce 3 suspects (Jacobin, Sanquilet, Girondist) with their motives and alibi. Hide one scientific inaccuracy in the description (e.g. about the operation of the guillotine) that will allow students to point out that the whole story is a hoax. The students’ task will be to solve a riddle and point out a historical error.
  • Case Study: Act as a business consultant. Create a short case study for high school students for an entrepreneurship basics lesson. Describe the fictitious company “Eko-Kubek”, which produces biodegradable cups. The company has a great product, but terrible marketing and logistics issues. Describe the problem in 3 paragraphs. The task of the students in groups will be to develop a recovery plan (marketing strategy, supply chain optimization).
  • Decision simulation: You are an advisor to King John Casimir just before the Swedish Deluge. Present the king (students) with 3 possible strategies for action with their potential consequences. The students’ task will be to choose one option and write a 150-word justification for their decision.

Such tasks turn passive recipients of knowledge into active participants in the thought process. AI breaks down the “lack of idea” barrier and provides a ready-made structure that you can adapt to your needs.

Remember that in each of these applications, your role as a teacher – curator, editor and educator – is absolutely crucial. AI gives you amazing tools, but it’s up to you to decide how you build an engaging and valuable lesson out of them.
