Group I: “Golden Shield” – Here you can feel at ease

These districts are the areas where statistically there are the least beatings or robberies. They are monitored, well-lit and inhabited by families and seniors.

Gdansk Oliwa

This is the absolute number one. Thanks to the presence of the University of Gdańsk campus and office buildings (Olivia Centre, Alchemia), the police and the city guard are present here 24/7.

• Safe Points: The vicinity of Wita Stwosza and Bażyńskiego Streets.
• What to watch out for: Theft of bicycles in front of the departments and in the vicinity of the Oliwa Park.

Gdansk Żabianka and Przymorze

Group II: “Urban Standard” – Wrzeszcz and Sopot Górny

Wrzeszcz (Upper and Lower)

• Advice: If you are renting an apartment here, stick to the main roads and avoid groups sitting in the stairwells of old buildings.

Nowy Port and Letnica (Gdańsk)

Nowy Port (Wyzwolenia Street) is a district with a strong local identity, where the “stranger” is quickly caught by sight. Letnica, on the other hand, is an island of luxury (new housing estates) surrounded by post-industrial areas.

• Problem: The road from the tram stop to the new blocks of flats in Letnica can be dark and empty – ideal conditions for someone who wants to “borrow” your phone quickly.

Gdynia, Chylonia and Cisowa

Classic blocks of flats in the north of Gdynia. Statistically, there are more domestic interventions and fights in front of liquor stores.

• Where to watch out: The vicinity of the Gdynia Chylonia station and dark passages under the Kwiatkowski flyover.

Group IV: “Night Triangles” – This is the easiest way to “fuck off” or cheat

If you are planning to party, these two places in 2026/2027 are the most problematic:

Sopot, Bohaterów Monte Cassino (“Monciak”) Street:

• Danger: Pushers for go-go clubs. If you enter for a “free drink”, you can wake up with a cleared account (records in the Tri-City are tens of thousands of zlotys).

Wrzeszcz is divided into two galaxies.

• Wrzeszcz Górny (area of the University of Technology): Streets such as Matejki, Jaśkowa Dolina or Wassowskiego are a safe haven. A lot of patrols, illuminated pedestrian routes leading to the Main Building of the Gdańsk Tech University. The biggest threat? Theft from cars and burglaries in basements. If you have an expensive bike, keep it in a room, not in a cage at Do Studzienki Street.
• Wrzeszcz Dolny: The surroundings of Wajdeloty Street are fashionable and safe (a lot of people in pubs until midnight). However, the further you go towards Dolna Brama Street or the edge with Zaspa (the area of Klinicka Street), the worse the lighting is. In 2027, Dolny Wrzeszcz is the place where pickpocketing in the crowd at Galeria Metropolia is the easiest place to get pickpocketed.

Orunia – A big change, but still the “wild west”?

Forget about the old opinion about Orunia as a place where you die for free.

• Orunia Górna: These are modern, safe family housing estates. You can run there at 22:00 without stress.
• Orunia Dolna (area of Gościnna Street and St. Adalbert’s Route): There is still a specific atmosphere of “local patriots” here. As a student, you are a stranger there. If you are renting a room there, avoid walking alone along the Radunia Canal after dark. Statistically, this is where the so-called “minor extortion” most often occurs.

Letnica – The trap of “modernity”

Letnica is the hit of 2026 – new blocks, close to the stadium. But beware: it’s an island.

• Danger: The road from the tram stop to the block. You pass through areas that still look like a set for a post-apocalypse movie. In 2027, there are a lot of taunts against female students returning from the center. If Letnica – then only if you have a car or a budget for Uber.

Sopot: A city where “security” ends at midnight

Sopot is the safest city to live in and the most dangerous to party.

• Upper Sopot (Kamienny Potok, Brodwino): These are oases of peace. However, the proximity of the forest means wild boar (a real physical threat in 2027!). The road from the SKM Kamienny Potok station to the blocks of flats is steep and wooded – it is worth having a powerful flashlight with you.
• Lower Sopot (Monciak area): At night, it’s a “war zone”. Not because of gangs, but because of extremely drunk people. In 2026/27, fights between groups of tourists and club security became a plague.
• Alert: Never, under any circumstances, enter strip-tease clubs at Monciak. Fraud systems for drinks “for PLN 0” in 2026 are so refined that 10-15 thousand disappearing from the account is a standard procedure.

Gdynia: Peace that can lull vigilance

Gdynia always crushes Gdańsk in safety rankings, but even here there are places where a student should not venture unnecessarily.

• Oksywie and Obłuże: Areas close to the Naval Academy. There are a lot of soldiers here, which theoretically increases safety, but in the evenings the vicinity of the bus termini in Oksywie is sometimes a place of “integration” of local difficult youth.
• Chylonia (area of Zamenhofa and Opata Hackiego Streets): This is the Gdańsk equivalent of Orunia. The district is becoming more civilized, but it is still the area with the highest number of police interventions in disturbing the order.
• Redłowo and Orłowo: Here, the only danger is that you will not notice a wild boar coming out of the bushes on Zwycięstwa Avenue. These are “premium” districts in terms of tranquility.

• Gdańsk Główny – Underground passage under the Upland Gate: Despite the cameras, it is a meeting place for extremely intoxicated and aggressive beggars.
• Reagan Park (Gdańsk): Beautiful during the day, at night – a dark labyrinth. A perfect place to steal your phone or meet a pack of 15 wild boars.
• Tunnel under the dead Vistula: Of course, you don’t go there on foot, but the entrance areas (stops) are completely deserted and unfriendly.
• Gdynia Główna Railway Station (back exit to Morska Street): Poorly lit, people looking for “easy loot” often hang around there.

Don’t just look at the panels and the color of the walls. Do a “security audit”:

• Road lighting to SKM: Take the route from the apartment to the nearest stop after 21:00. Are there lanterns? Do you have to walk through wastelands?
• Intercom and cage: Is the door to the cage lockable with a code/pill? Are there any traces of “feasting” on the cage (empty cans, cigarette butts)?
• Neighborhood: Look at the balconies. If you see a lot of pigeon nets and flowers – elderly people or families live here (safely). If you see empty balconies with tires exposed – it’s a rotational lease (less predictable).
• Bicycle racks: If they are inside the yard and the bikes are fastened with thick chains – know that theft is the norm here.

Where will you eventually live?

If you are a “fuchsia” (a first-year student) and you are afraid of the big city, aim for Zaspa, Przymorze or Oliwa. You will be close to the university, and the way from the party to home will be safe and illuminated. If you want to feel the atmosphere of Gdańsk and are not afraid of the hustle and bustle of the city, choose Wrzeszcz, but invest in a solid laptop insurance and a good door lock.

Skip the offers from Nowy Port and Lower Orunia, unless your hobby is Thai boxing and you carry nothing more valuable than a city card. Tri-City 2027 is a safe place, as long as you are not looking for trouble where tourism meets hard, port life.

Students’ questions about safety in the Tri-City

Can a girl safely return alone with SKM at night?

Yes, provided that the basic rules are followed. SKMs run less often at night (every hour), which makes people gather on the platforms. It is safest to wait in illuminated places, under surveillance cameras (there are so-called yellow SOS posts at every stop in Gdańsk and Gdynia). Always choose the first carriage on the train. Most incidents at SKM take place between groups of people who know each other or are under the influence of alcohol – random attacks on students are rare. It is also worth using the “Uber for Women” option, which is already standard in Gdańsk 2027 and gives additional mental comfort.

Which streets in Wrzeszcz should be avoided?

Wrzeszcz is a specific mix. Avoid venturing deep into the courtyards at Waryńskiego Street or the Lower Gate late at night if you don’t live there. The revitalization of the waterfronts and the new cultural center have changed a lot, but the mentality of some residents is changing more slowly. As a student, you may feel uncomfortable there because of the “dense” atmosphere on Wyzwolenia or Marynarki Polskiej Streets. It is not a place where you will die, but the chance of taunts such as “do you have a problem?” is statistically higher here than in Oliwa. If you’re looking for tranquility, choose a different location.

Where is it the most “dangerous” in Gdynia?

In Gdynia, it is difficult to point to a district that would be objectively dangerous on a nationwide scale. The largest number of police interventions is recorded in the city centre (Świętojańska Street, near Kaszubski Square) – mainly due to fights in front of catering establishments. Old legends about the “bad” Chylonia can be put among fairy tales, although the vicinity of the Gdynia Chylonia station after 10:00 p.m. may still cause anxiety due to groups of young people and poor lighting of some passages between blocks.

What is the “Tri-City Bermuda Triangle” and does it still exist?

Historically, the “Bermuda Triangle” was the name given to the area around Łąkowa Street in the Lower Town. Today it is a place of luxury hotels and apartment buildings. The old name has survived in the memory of older Gdańsk residents. Nowadays, the “triangle” can be called the areas where students most often lose their phones: Sopot Monciak – Gdańsk Shipyard (clubs) – Gdańsk Główny. It is here, in the crowd, that it is easiest to pick pickpockets or get into a fight with a random person.
